Re: Hot Rod Girls
Four wheels make a hot rod, right? In which case, let me introduce you to the Salt City Derby Girls from Utah - the finest bunch of females on the mid-west roller derby circuit:
“Rollerderby is very exciting and action-packed,” says Trix, who rides pivot for the team, “Rollerderby is a good way for us to get our aggression out and make friends at the same time.”
When I was in the States, I once went out with a Derby girl - they're like a different specious. She actually said to me one night, with a totally innocent look in her cornflower blue eyes, "Why is it guys get so excited over roller derby?" Well......duh...
Salt City veteran Brew Ha-Ha adds disingenuously, “Rollerderby isn’t your typical cookie-cutter sport. You imagine all those girls who play volleyball or softball, and they have a certain image, but for the rest of us rollerderby is the place to be.”
Nyda the Dead explains some of the frustrations of roller derby. “There are legal target zones where you can hit somebody, and there are legal blocking zones which are what you can hit with. But I can’t do what I may want to do at times which is to elbow someone in the face, or kick ‘em with my skates. We can’t run into someone’s back really hard, trip ‘em, use our hands to make contact or head butt an opponent. We have to use the appropriate parts of our bodies to block or make contact—the shoulders, hips and yes, the butt,”
Can't head butt an opponent? Well, thats seems unreasonable.....
Roller Derby Girls are optimistic about the sport. “I absolutely think that in the next year, rollerderby will get huge," says Red Succubus.
