Perfect ornaments for the home - Upcycling - Jason Hills
Sydney-based artist Jason Hills has become internationally-renowned for his approach to upcycling - taking old trash and creating a work of art from it.
In particular, he takes old ornaments, preferably with a religious or classical theme, and applies a touch of rockabilly dia de las muertos to turn them into something just a little but special.
What made him feel this could work as an artform? "I really love the traditional Mexican day of the dead figures, shrines and the environment," he explains, "They are usually set in everyday scenarios—it gives a lighter take on death. So, I thought it could really work with the Victorian style and religious figures."
Jason is a great advocate of the upcycling movement. "It’s so amazing when people transform everyday unwanted items into something beautiful," he says, "They give the item a whole new life in a totally different environment that it was never intended to be in."
The artist plans on trying his hands at bigger projects in the future. "I already use all different types of figurines and statues," he explains, "But, I would definitely like to branch out to other things like furniture and household items in the future."
Jason's work is slowly spreading, thanks to his support from the rockabilly scene. "My work has been received well locally," he says, "I have had a couple of stalls at some roller derby bouts in Perth which has been quite fun. A lot of Facebook sites that sell rockabilly and alternative products have requested custom pieces and I do have fans from all over the world."

Nice art, but where exactly is this guy from and how can we see more of his art?

Although he is described as a Sydney-based artist by Forbes magazine, I believe his company is in Perth (!) and he can be contacted through Facebook here:
