Animal Testing - Cosmetics etc

So after I posted a reply on the cosmetics thread I decided to do a bit of research on which companies test on animals. My mother is a naturopath who used to have an aromatherapy clinic and she still orders the skincare stuff (miessense + herbalife) that she used to sell, so usually I use organic + cruelty free skincare.

A couple of years ago I looked into which cosmetic companies tested on animals and looking at the lists now, theres quite a few things that have changed. I managed to compile a big list of products that I've seen on aussie shelves via the australia vogue forums, choose cruelty free + caring consumer -

It's surprising how many products I use are tested on animals. It's a shame, but the next round of products I'll by I'll make sure they're on the "do" list.

... so just out of curiosity, who/what do they actually test the products ON?

I would have assumed it would be illegal to test unproved/unlicensed products on humans? Or maybe these products aren't covered by TGA regulations? Does anyone know?

Well, I've always heard the awful one where they put/drop stuff in bunny rabbits eyes to see if they get a reaction

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a coalition of women’s, public health, labour, environmental health and consumer-rights groups. Our goal is to protect the health of consumers and workers by requiring the health and beauty industry to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems, and replace them with safer alternatives.

Personal care products like shampoo, conditioner, after shave, lotion and makeup are not regulated by the FDA or any other government agency. It is perfectly legal and very common for companies to use ingredients that are known or suspected to be carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins in the their products. Consumers buy these products at drug stores, grocery stores, online or in salons, usually without questioning the product’s safety.

We are asking cosmetics and personal care products companies to sign The Compact for Safe Cosmetics (also known as the Compact for the Global Production of Safer Health and Beauty Products), a pledge to remove toxic chemicals and replace them with safer alternatives in every market they serve. As of August 2007, 600 companies have signed the Compact -- and that number increases every day!

The Campaign works with endorsing organizations and individuals so that together we can ramp up the pressure on companies that have not signed the Compact and continue to sell us toxic products, including Estee Lauder, L’Oreal, Avon and many others. Our founding organizations also work closely with other allies to reform the chemical policies that allow for toxic ingredients in consumer products in the first place.

When a company signs the Compact for Safe Cosmetics they are taking a meaningful pledge to use safer ingredients immediately and over the long term. The company agrees to participate in conference calls and in-person meetings about twice a year, and periodic follow-ups to ensure compliance with the Compact. In addition, Skin Deep will soon show a graphic representation of where signers are in terms of Compact compliance since some companies are newer than others, and others have been more aggressively seeking safer alternatives to toxic ingredients than their peers, and should get recognition for their efforts.

They test listorine on animals?

God I didn't know that... what the hell!

I use Nutrimetics skin care products.. they don't test on animals.

As far as make-up goes, I'm really not too fussy, I just use whatever happens to be in my make-up kit at the time! A lot of sheer cover & covergirl.

I was using Loreal lipsticks but I've gone off it now.
