hi Friends,
How are you? i'm fine. i am writing to tell you sad news that US rockabilly singer from the 50's Billy Lee Riley who had the hit single Red Hot passed away on Sunday from cancer aged 75. He was born on October 5th 1933 in Pocahontas,Arkansas which he was the son of a sharecopper. served in the army for 4 years and began in 1955 in memphis, tennessee before lured by sun records. his first record was released on september 1st 1956 which was called trouble bound but his first hit was flyin saucers rock'n'roll with the b-side I Want You Baby and it was released on February 23rd 1957 which Jerry Lee Lewis played on the single. the single "red Hot" was released on September 30th which again Jerry Lee Lewis played on it and it showed promise to become a big hit but Sun Records owner Sam Phillips pulled the promotion and switched to Great Balls Of Fire by jerry lee lewis and his other singles with sun did not have a lot of sales as his promotion stopped. Billy had a brief career with the Little Green men were the main Sun Studio back up band which had roland janes, JM VAn Eaton, marvin Pepper, jimmy wilson and Martin Willis. in 1960 he left sun and with Roland Janes formed RITA records which they produced Mountain Of Love by harold Dorman and also formed 2 other labels later Mojo and nita. Billy lee moved in to los angeles in 1962 as he was a session musician and played on records by the beach boys, dean martin, sammy davis Jnr and others and he record songs under various aliases. in the 70's, he quiet music and his own construction business and came back to music full time by the end of the decade as the result of Link Wray and robert Gordon doing versions of Flyin Saucers Rock'n'Roll and Red Hot which led to recording @ Sun. in 1997 he was nominated for a Grammy for his Album Hot Damn which was released on the Capricorn label and in 2006 recorded Hillbilly Rockin Man. May the music live on even though Billy Lee has passed on which it's sad and keep on rocking
