On the news recently, they had a new thing they do in cleveland-brisbane, about p plate drivers getting educated by the victims and families of people who have been seriously hurt in car accidents, from drink driving, speeding and even just being tired, they showed this to people who had been caught breaking the law and police officers made them go to this convention. They are now suggesting to make it compulsory to all learner drivers before the go onto P plates.
300 people have been to it so far and only 5 out of that 300 have been caught doing something wrong. It was on the news and it really hit people, they were crying and promising on camera they wouldn't speed anymore.

I think this is a brilliant idea, your thoughts?

Outstanding idea, part of the learner driver training should include wet weather driving, night driving and emergency situations. Being able to reverse park and do a hill start doesn't qualify someone to be a driver. My 2c.

On tv, they had no 'for' or 'against' it everyone thought it was a brilliant idea, who could have anything against it?
It will most likely only happen in cleveland at this stage,
and will take a few years for them to spread it across the country

I dont know that a program like this would have a tangable impact on the stats. that said I think its good for people to see the not so nice side, and more importantly the results of the silly little things that end in tragity, like not concentrating etc, the media seem to be focused on hoons but a larger chunk of the pie chart of young drivers road incidetns is simple complacency

I have attended a number of incidents involving young divers some worse than others it is true that when a car goes bang at 100+ it makes a big mess but people forget the Bang at 50k's because the driver wasnt concenraiting and just didnt see the (insert non moving object or life form here) I would say through personal experance that 60+ % of all fatal incedents I have been to are due to this casue

i intentionally took my daughter to an industrial area in the wet and the same place in the dry and did some stuff (hard braking, sharp turns and handbrake turns etc) to point out the differances

Great Idea, Reality checks hit the heart. I work as a Firey and have seen way too many young people on their "P's" and people they have hit die or seriously injured for no reason on the roads. Life is so fragile and so very easily taken. Like Mudflap said a hit even at 50k's is still a big hit!!! Then two cars at 50 k's is s 100 k hit. Just get on you tube and type in "bad crash" or "crash test". Cars bend big time!
When you have been to a few of these you understand why the police seem to be hard on you when you get caught speeding or doing something stupid. They have seen enough unnecessary blood shed to last far to many lifetimes !!!
And you know what, there is absolutely no dignity in a big Hit, none what so ever! I don't wan't to go that way, no matter how instant or painless!

I'm all for defensive driving courses and the likes. I hit a truck at 100kms (and yes I was on my P's!) Not my fault, Stupid cow cocky with his coke bottle glasses failed to give way. He said "oh I looked DOWN the road not ON the road" moron

But seriously if I hadn't have been such a hoon and knew the limits of my car and what it would do at those speeds I would have taken the roof off and 4 heads with it.

Agreed with Ebony,

When you go around something like a slippery corner or round about in the wet and your ass end slides out, most people would generally hit the brakes and thats the worst thing that you can do, you straight away lose any control you had and you'll end up in a ditch or hitting a pole or another car.. if you just let off the accelerator and let it slide out a little its fairly easy to regain control.

I won't deny that i don't occasionally drift or slide corners or whatnot, but people need to be taught it not for the hooning side of it, but because in the event it happens i'm gona know how to straighten up my car before someone whos never been sideways before will.

Its not just about knowing what to do yourself in that situation, but also the abilities of your car and how it handles in those situations and knowing how to control a car when its sliding sideways.

I think driver training in the form of better and more practical tests are gona be far more beneficial than showing some crash videos. In your driving test, you should be tested on above mentioned things like going around a roundabout thats not only slippery, but isn't on a horizontal axis.. they are the worst ones and people don't realise that.

As far as parallel parking goes, in my two and a half years of driving.. i've never parallel parked or reverse parked.
