I want to start

Post by My Little Rockabilly Kat on Tue Mar 24, 2009 3:55 am

My own 'Alternative sub culture market' in brisbane and or surrounding suburbs, i have the stall holders and the name, just need a community hall or something?
Since im not from brisbane i don't know..anywhere that i could look into having it.
It would be on every 2 months and only be a donation to get in (gold coin, spare change whatever) to pay for a band
Since attending the tattoo show, i got a look in on all the different scenes there is..i got new customers..instead of just the rockabilly folk..and they have an alternative market in melbourne with a band playing and heaps of stalls i think we need one. tell me your thoughts, if it would work and suggestions for halls and venues.
cheers cherry

Great idea!! cheers

Hmmmm, possible venues.. well, you either want to start at a smaller venue until it gets bigger and then you move.. Or you find a venue that can expand with growth overtime - as in being able to hold more and more stalls as well as catering to more attendees.. Maybe even find some sort of big oval/park area, find who owns it (Brisbane Council or privately owned) ask if you can use it once a month or twice a month depending on how often you want to do this.. Alternatively, drive around Brisbane and write down the names of places that you think might be suitable for what you want Very Happy

I dont know brisban well at all I fly in I drive to fishermans island, then to Manly, then to Kangeroo Point where I stay at the Illmondo (near the story bridge) then do it all in reverce the next day so all I know is the Jazz club the up side of the Jazz club (if it fits the other criteria is its surrounded by trees and park land, close to the ferry launch blah blah blah

I do know so good cafe's though but they dont suit the idea

Great idea Kat! One thing to do is make sure your ass is covered for insurance! Sure its a pain in the ass, but last thing you want is someone suing you because little Johnny tripped over a table leg!

Down here you generally have to pay hire fees for a Council hall. There may be other community groups with suitable venues though, like scouts? Or find a nice pub or something which usually doesnt get much Sunday morning trade - they might welcome the early customers. Another option is find a suitable workshop who can open their doors on a weekend - good exposure for them, most industrial areas quiet on a weekend.

what if you work in conjunction with your local Hot rod or classic car club that way part of the insurence will be covered by there insurance (they can flog food n drinks (also try your volanteer emergency services they need a good cash injection) this will take care of the PL for the venue it's self the next thing to consider is the stall holders, most ground hire WILL NOT cover the PL for the stall holders, you really need to make sure they have this, trust me I speak from experance we did a thing with an organisation I was involved with and we had a few carnies all went well till a girl fell on the jumping castle and had to be carted away in an ambulence with no feeling in her legs, we obviasly had to inform our insurer of a possible claim they very quickly told us the the insurence for such an incident is the responcability of the stall holder, fortunaltly all was well and there was no claim made, but this could be jsut as bigger poblem if somthing fell off a sellers stall and injured some one

BE CAREFUL

Re the Public Liability - i used to sell stuff at markets and every single one of them insisted on $10million cover for each stallholder. (which I thought was a sad sign of the times.... I thought that was maybe just Sydney for ya) There is a magazine in the newsagents about markets - I can't remember the name of it - (kind of like Cheap Eats) and they have ads for different insurance companies that will cover you for one day (I can't remember how much it was but something like $50)

What about the local schools? they are usually underfunded and looking to hire out halls etc for a bit of extra cash?

Good luck! Sounds like a great idea! Very Happy

wow i had no idea about the whole insurance thing for markets. thats crazy.

if your thinking of a pub kinda place how about the alibi? they have garage sales and zine swaps about once a month on sundays, they even have a day for selling/buying low riders. if you got in contact with the owner maybe you guys could organise adding other vendors to their sales? it is tiny area but it could probably still work.

Might be worth contacting some commercial shops to see if they want to vend to get the ball rolling?

For $10 I'd have a stand if I was closer!
