[b][i]Hi Friends, Very Happy
How are you? Hope you are all well. this month on january 8th was 52 years ago when in 1957 Bill haley and the comets began their Australian tour and it was the very first rock''n'roll tour in australia. On the bill with them on that tour were- The Platters,Lavern baker, Freddie bell and the Bellboys and Big Joe turner who did the original version of shake rattle and roll. the tour started in Newcastle @ Newcastle stadium, brisbane Stadium in brisbane, Adelaide the Tivoli theatre, festival hall in melbourne, Sydney stadium in Sydney, 4 more shows in melbourne and 7 shows in Sydney which the tour lasted 3 weeks and 330,00 people attended the shows and it was the first of many rock'n'roll tours of australia which continues to this day. it was promoted by american born promoter Lee Gordon who had brought people like frank sinatra, johnny ray, betty hutton, Louis Armstrong, Abbott & Costello and others for australian tours which he paved the way for people like Kevin jacobsen, Michale Chugg,Michael Gudinksi, PAul danity and others and OF COURSE some of the artists on that tour have passed on like bill haley in 1981, Lavern Baker in 1997, Freddie Bell in 2008, Big Joe turner in 1985, 4 of the Platters members Tony Williams in 1992, Paul Robi in 1989,David Lynch in 1981 and Zola Taylor in 2007 and John grande(the comets) in 2006. herb Reed(the Platters) still tours as Herb Reed and the Platters and some of the members of the comets are still around including guitarist Franny Beecher.
